Samsung said on Thursday that it has developed an enterprise solid-state drive (SSD) based on the PCIe 5.0 standard.

PM1743 has double the bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 SSDs at 32GT/s, the company said.

This will make the latest SSD optimal for data centers and enterprise servers, which are seeing an explosion of data to process from the recent rise in AI and Metaverse applications, Samsung said.

The new enterprise SSD has a sequential read speed of 13,000 MB/s, which is 1.9 times faster than its PCIe 4.0 predecessor. Its random read speed is also increased by 1.7 times to 2,500K IOPS.

Meanwhile, sequential and random write speeds have been each increased by 1.7 times and 1.9 times to 6,600MB/s and 250K IOPS, respectively.

According to Samsung, PM1743 is also dual-ported so that it can function even if one port is down. It also has root-of-trust and a security processor for data protection.

The new enterprise SSD will go into production during the first quarter of 2022.

It will be offered in the traditional 2.5-inch and new 3-inch form factors at 1.92TB to 15.36TB.
