Kglass expands UTG processing to support up to 20-inch size

Display glass processing firm Kglass said it can now support processing for ultra-thin glass (UTG) up to 20-inch in size.

UTG are used as cover windows in foldable displays. Kglass said it has built a processing system for the glasses at its plant in Gimcheon, North Gyeongsang Province.

The plant can handle UTG from 6-inch to 20-inch in size and can process, reinforce, coat, laminate and attach these curved glasses, the company said.

UTG processing cuts the mother glass into the size customers want.

The cut area needs to be uniform so that the glass retains its durability.

Samsung Display currently uses Doinsys as its processor for UTG.

Kglass’ support for 20-inch sized UTG means it can offer its services for foldable panels that will be used in tablets and notebooks.

The company first built a pilot line for UTG processing in 2020. It can now process 300,000 units of 6-inch UTG per month.

In June last year, Kglass’ investor Softcen, which owns a 49% stake in the South Korean firm, had signed a 20.9 billion won deal with Jiangsu Suchuan Technology to build a UTG cover window production facility.

Softcen also invested 50 million yuan into Jiangsu Suchuan for a 5.88% stake the same month.

Jiangsu Suchuan is currently building a flexible foldable panel factory in Jaingsu Province, a project worth 6 billion yuan.

Meanwhile, Kglass was founded in 2015 at Daegu but moved its headquarters to Gimcheon in 2017.

It supplied various glass products to Samsung and LG. Kglass began developing UTG processing technology in 2019.
