South Korean battery maker SK On has named Toptec as its back-end partner for its new factory in Hungary, TheElec has learned.

Toptec will be supplying equipment used to group battery cells into modules and packs to SK On’s factory in Invancsa, Hungary, sources said.

The equipment is also used to attach bus bars and weld battery cells, they said. Toptec procures the laser needed for this process from companies like Coherent and attaches them to the packaging equipment.

The deal with SK On is expected to worth over 100 billion won.

Toptec had supplied similar equipment to SK On for use at its factory in Georgia in the US.

The equipment maker is highly likely to win orders for them again by the South Korean battery maker for its factory in Yancheng, China, the sources added.

Toptec had signed a 33 billion won deal with Woowon Technology, a supplier to SK On since 2017, to supply battery equipment. Woowon Technology in turn supplied these to SK On. After that, Toptec began to deal with SK On directly.

Toptec previously focused on display production equipment but has shifted its focus to battery equipment after it fell out with customer Samsung Display over technology leak allegations.
