OLED notebook unit shipment to reach 8.9 million units this year
A 78% year-on-year increase, according to Omdia
Unit shipment of OLED notebooks this year is expected to reach 8.9 million units in 2022, according to analyst firm Omdia.
This will be a 78% increase from the 5 million units shipped last year, the analyst firm said, accounting for 3.4% of the total notebook that is expected to be shipped this year.
OLED display panels are lighter than their liquid crystal display (LCD) counterparts while also having a better contrast ratio and response time.
They are used in high-end notebooks by vendors and are especially being adopted in gaming notebooks. OLED notebooks debuted in 2019 and last year around ten models of them were introduced to the market.
However, it is likely that OLED notebooks won’t be replacing LCD notebooks completely for a while as they are more expensive, consume more power and are susceptible to burn-in.
According to Omdia, Apple was developing a notebook with an OLED panel with low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) technology.
Adoption of LTPO TFT will allow Cupertino to have the OLED panel consume 5% to 10% less power, the analyst firm said.
Apple had already applied LTPO TFT technology on the OLED panel on iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max.
