Samsung is expected to begin selling OLED TVs with panels provided by LG Display in September, analyst UBI Research said in its forecast on Thursday.

UBI Research CEO Choong Hoon Yi said during a conference hosted by the analyst firm in Busan, South Korea that LG Display is expected to manufacture up to 11.2 million units of white-OLED (W-OLED) panels this year.

Around a million to 1.5 million of that total will be supplied to Samsung, Yi said. At the same time, LG Electronics and Sony are expected to procure 7 million units and 1.7 million units of the panels from LG Display, the UBI Research CEO said.

The analyst firm had predicted late last year that Samsung will be procuring 2 million units of W-OLED panels in 2022 but lowered its forecast following reports that Samsung and LG Display’s negotiations over unit prices was causing delays.

Meanwhile, Yi also noted that Samsung will need to procure at least 6.75 million units of TV OLED panels per year to be competitive in the OLED TV market.

The figure will be equivalent to 15% of Samsung’s total annual TV shipment of 45 million units.

Yi provided his reasoning that OLED TVs were also accounting for 15% of the total annual TV shipment of Samsung’s rivals LG Electronics and Sony.

The UBI Research CEO also noted that LG Display will need to secure a long-term contract to supply OLED panels with Samsung.

This will allow it to increase spending in OLED production facilities so that it can increase its OLED panel supply to Samsung while continuing to do so for its existing customers LG Electronics and Sony so as not to lose their trust.

Meanwhile, Samsung has also unveiled its first OLED TV in nine years. It procured the quantum dot-OLED (QD-OLED) panels for the TV from Samsung Display.
