SK On has recently chosen battery equipment maker MOT as a partner to manufacture prismatic batteries, TheElec has learned.

The battery maker had asked the equipment supplier to propose the technology needed for the production process, sources said.

The pair also discussed the supply of assembly equipment that will be used at SK On’s pilot line for prismatic batteries, they also said.

The South Korean battery maker is aiming to start the installation of the kits in November.

It is planning to use jelly roll insertion machines and prismatic can welding equipment.

SK On is seeking to secure supplies to rival Samsung SDI, which already manufactures prismatic batteries, the sources said.

As SK On has been more aggressive in investing in the electric vehicle (EV) battery business compared to Samsung SDI, suppliers are showing high interest, they said.

In prismatic battery production, cathode, anode and separator are winded to a jelly roll and then put inside cans.

However, Samsung SDI currently doesn’t use this conventional method and stacks the cathode, anode and separator for its latest Gen 5 batteries.

MOT grew on the back of supplying Samsung SDI with etching laser cleaners to their second factory in Goed, Hungary.

MOT’s revenue was a meager 1.5 billion won in 2019 but this grew to 30.1 billion won in 2020 and 66.2 billion won in 2021 thanks to the deal with Samsung SDI.
