Samsung Display acquires blue OLED patents from Cynora

Samsung Display has acquired patents from German firm Cynora related to high-efficiency blue OLED, TheElec has learned.

Multiple companies are currently working to develop blue OLED with high efficiency.

Cynora is among them and it has been developing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) blue OLED materials.

Currently commercialized red and green OLED use phosphorescence materials, which have 100% internal light efficiency, while blue OLEDs use fluorescence material with only 25%.

Cynora is among those attempting to increase the efficiency of fluorescence material while others are attempting to adopt phosphorescence material.

Samsung is thought to have acquired their patents for around US$100 million.

Samsung Electronics’ subsidiary Samsung Venture Investment had been an investor in Cynora, which is facing financial difficulty.

Samsung Electronics could have asked Samsung Display to acquire the patents to get a return on its investment, sources said.

Samsung Display itself is also developing its own new blue OLED technology which uses phosphorescence material.

US firm UDC had also previously said it plans to commercialize blue OLED with phosphorescence material by 2024.
