Battery production equipment maker Hana Technology was in talks with a South Korean battery cell company to supply equipment for the production of solid-state batteries, TheElec has learned.

The pair are discussing a turn-key deal for assembly kits, sources said, which will include jelly roll injectors, high-temperature, high-pressure packager and tab welders.

These are for a pouch-type solid-state battery.

Solid-state batteries require higher temperature and pressure between 200 MPa to 500MPa on the pouch film that contains the cathode, anode and solid electrolyte.

1MPa refers to 10kg of pressure on 1 centimeter-square surface so 200MPa is equivalent to 2 metric tonnes of pressure.

The pressure must be constant so that the pouch film doesn’t get damaged.

Hana Technology had previously supplied equipment in turn-key to Norway’s Freyr for semisolid-state batteries.

The company has also received technology from a South Korean government institute for making solid electrolytes at minus 200 Celcius degrees.
