South Korean display equipment maker DE&T is jointly developing key EV battery making equipment with a local battery cell manufacturer and may supply the firm, according to industry sources on July 15.

They expected positive results in about mid-2020 from the collaboration, which involves different experimental methods, such as notching, stacking and degassing.

DE&T is an affiliate of APS Holdings. Another affiliate AP System is also on the verge of entering the battery equipment market using the tab welding method, based on the existing laser technology such as ELA and LLO.

Tab welding involves attaching aluminum and copper tabs onto the positive and negative ends of the battery, and comes after the assembly process. The assembly process itself would be in the sequence of notching, stacking, tap welding, packaging and degassing in a turnkey operation.

If everything goes according to schedule, market watchers expect more synergy from DE&T and AP System, as the pair can together enter the battery equipment market for displays.

Already, rivals such as SNU Precision, Jusung Engineering and System R&D are either already in the market, or looking for new opportunities.

APS Holdings also will receive a legup in other related businesses with the latest development. The firm has made significant progress of its own in fine metal mask (FMM) and battery equipment.
