Samsung supplies HKMG DDR5 DRAM to Taiwanese firm G.Skill

Samsung has supplied its DDR5 DRAM with a high-k metal gate process applied to a Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer G.Skill, according to analyst firm Techinsights.

The chip was being used in the G.Skill Trident Z5 series memory package, the firm said.

Techinsights said it expects high-k metal gate, or HKMG, technology to become the industry standard for new DRAMs going forward, with Samsung now successfully commercializing the technology on DDR5 following their application of GDDR6.

G.Skill manufactures memory modules by procuring the best memory products from companies such as Samsung and SK Hynix.

The Taiwanese firm tunes these chips so that they can overclock. It has been launching the Trident Z5 series, which is based on DDR5 DRAM.

Samsung announced the development DDR5 DRAM back in March and is the first memory chip maker to apply HKMG on them.

Dielectric high-k metals are used to form the gates instead of silicon oxide to prevent current leakage. The gate themselves are also made with metals that go well with high-k instead of polysilicon.

High-k metals are being widely adopted in the latest chips as they have narrower gate widths than before.
