Telechips to launch MCU for infotainment next year
Using Samsung’s 28nm
Telechips is planning to start mass production of its microcontroller unit (MCU) for automobiles next year, TheElec has learned.
The 32-bit MCU is for infotainment and the fabless company will start manufacturing them sometime in the first quarter of 2023.
Telechips begin developing the chip under a national project in 2019.
The chip is low-power and has upgraded telecommunication and security capabilities compared to the company’s prior offerings.
Called VCP, the chip will be made using Samsung’s 28-nanometer process.
The chip is in preproduction and Telechips is in talks for supply deals with customers.
A conventional combustible engine vehicle has around 200 to 300 MCUs per unit.
MCU for infotainment is the least used and the last replaced.
However, there is currently a shortage of the chips and most suppliers use 8-inch wafers while Telechips’ was designed for 12-inch wafers.
The company is also developing MCUs for use in the body and chassis of vehicles.
