LG Display is planning to halt production of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels for TVs in South Korea this month, TheElec has learned.

The P7 factory at the company’s facility in Paju, which is responsible for the panels’ production, will halt production within December.

The nearby P8 will continue to manufacture LCD panels for IT products.

LG Display will also continue to manufacture LCD panels for TVs at its facility in Guangzhou, China. However, their production capacity will be reduced by 40% than before __ from 210,000 Gen 8.5 substrates per month to 120,000. The facility has two factory lines __ GP1 and GP2.

P7 had previously made LCD panels ranging from 43-inch to 50-inch in size.

LG Display will only manufacture what it had contracted to do so in long-term contracts with customers, then halt production.

The South Korean display panel maker is expected to convert the line to manufacture OLED panels instead.

The company had previously said its existing TV LCD lines had the capacity to be changed to those manufacturing OLED panels for TVs and IT products.

Meanwhile, Samsung Display halted all its LCD production during the first half of this year.
