Samsung to launch 77-inch TV and 49-inch monitor with OLED panels

Samsung is planning to launch a 77-inch OLED TV and a 49-inch OLED monitor during the first quarter of this year, TheElec has learned. 

These additions mean Samsung will have a total of 3 models of OLED TVs and 2 models of OLED monitors this year. The tech giant already offers 55-inch and 65-inch OLED TVs and 34-inch OLED monitors.

The branding of these products will be “Samsung OLED”, sources said.

This is meaningful as the company currently uses QD-OLED panels supplied by Samsung Display, but the branding indicates it will be open to procuring W-OLED panels from LG Display as well.

The new models for TVs and monitors will continue to use QD-OLED panels provided by subsidiary Samsung Display, the sources added.

Using QD-OLED as the brand would also have caused confusion for consumers. Most customers of Samsung TVs don’t understand the difference between QLED, Neo QLED, or OLED.

Meanwhile, Samsung last year asked Samsung Display to manufacture 48-inch OLED panels for TVs.

But Samsung Display refused this and instead offered to make 49-inch panels.

Sources said this is because, from a single Gen 8.5 substrate, Samsung Display can get two 77-inch panels and two 48-inch panels or two 77-inch and two 49-inch panels.

This means cutting out a 48-inch panel isn’t really more economical for Samsung Display to do as compared to a 49-inch panel, so there was no reason for it to not offer a bigger panel.

Display panel makers can cut different sizes of panels from one glass substrate.
