BOE facing problems with OLED aimed at iPhone 15

BOE was facing problems in developing OLED panels aimed at Apple’s iPhone 15, TheElec has learned.

The hole display was facing a light leakage problem __ where the light that isn’t properly covered by the screen comes from the corners or edges. And in this case, the light was leaking out of the hole area at the top where the front camera is located, sources said.

Apple introduced hole-display for the Pro models for its iPhone 14 series. The hole housed the front camera lens as well as sensors for FaceID.

Cupertino is planning to have all four models on its iPhone 15 adopt this feature.

BOE is currently the developer of low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistor (TFT) OLED panels for the standard and Plus models of iPhone 15.

But the Chinese display giant is facing problems with the yield of the panels, mostly from the light leakage problem.

This means it may unable to start mass production of the panels in June, thereby losing the initial orders from Apple.

Apple asked Samsung Display and LG Display last year to add thin-film encapsulation and additional inkjet processes after the formation of the touch electrode during the production of the OLED panels aimed at iPhone 14 Pro models.

These were done to make sure the hole on the panel was properly formed and undamaged.

The iPhone maker also asked them to use edge light blocking around the camera lens.
