Samsung’s Lee Jae-yong makes on-spot checks

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong is visiting Samsung’s major manufacturing facilities to check on the situation in the aftermath of the Japanese government’s latest move to cut South Korea from its whitelist.

The decision, coming amid an ongoing trade row between the two countries, is making it difficult for Japanese suppliers to export items to South Korea. Last month, Tokyo banned the exports of three key materials needed for assembling displays and semiconductors last month.

On Aug. 6, Lee visited the Onyang Campus located in Asan of South Chungcheong Province. Two days later, he toured the plants in Pyeongtaek. He also plans to visit the system LSI and foundry lines in Kiheung and the display lines in Tangjeong.

The Onyang Campus is responsible for packaging semiconductors and running final pilot tests. Samsung’s digital solutions head Kim Ki-nam, chief of the memory business Jin Gyo-young and system LSI head Kang In-yeop were among the executives who flanked Lee on the visit.

In April, Samsung Electronics took over the Panel Level Package (PLP) business from Samsung Electro-Mechanics, which handles next-generation semiconductor packaging technology.

The vice chairman also talked about coping measures against the Japanese export restrictions on spot at the facilities, according to the company.

Earlier last month, and also immediately before visiting the manufacturing plants, Lee had summoned chip display executives to emergency business meetings. Between July 7-12, Lee visited Japan.
