LGE uses upgrader to refute Samsung on 8K quality
LG also reveals video supporting its claims
On Sept. 25, LG Electronics unveiled a device for reinforcing the quality of its TVs in a move to refute Samsung’s latest criticism saying LG TVs are incapable of playing 8K images. The electronics maker also revealed a video supporting its claims and countering Samsung’s accusations.
In the video, a top LGE executive on TV software platform development compares 8K TVs from both Samsung and LG to indicate that Samsung was wrong about LG’s TV quality. He also played an 8K video supporting HEVC codec. Unlike before, the LG TV worked without a glitch.
The LG executive then compared videos encoded with VP9 and AV1 codec, and in this case, it was the Samsung TV that didn’t work. When playing videos via Youtube, the LG TV showed 8K quality, while the Samsung TV supported 4K at best.
The demonstration was possible thanks to an upgrader that LGE unveiled on this day. The LG unit explained that when the upgrader is attached, its TVs can replay videos with HEVC, AV1 and VP9 codec. The device, LG said, would be offered for free.
In response, Samsung said it found it unnecessary for LG to replay the videos when the two companies have already held demonstrations.
The two rivals have been engaged in a fierce battle over who has the upper hand when it comes to 8K TVs. Both sides have conducted demonstrations trying to prove the other wrong.
