DRAM prices stayed flat in September: DRAMeXchange

Prices forecast to fall in Q4

Global DRAM prices stayed nearly unchanged in September on the anticipation that there could be disruptions to production due to Japan’s recent restrictions on tech materials to South Korea.

However, experts say this could be the result of arbitrary measures taken by distributors to control the prices. On the whole, they believe there is still a DRAM supply glut, indicating that prices could fall in the fourth quarter.

Figures from market research firm DRAMeXchange showed the fixed trading price –the price for which chipmakers such as Samsung and SK hynix supply to their clients – for DDR4 8Gb DRAM for PCs at $2.94 for the month of September, which was unchanged from July or August.

DRAMeXchange pointed out that because the restrictions from Tokyo has not affected actual exports, prices were likely to fall in the final quarter of the year on a supply glut. Particularly for server DRAM, the price decline was expected to be more severe, according to DRAMeXchange.

DRAM for PCs prices hinge on when the supply shortage for Intel 10nm and 14nm CPUs ends. CPU shortages spell bad news for the DRAM market. The market research firm said that once this gets solved, there could be positive implications for PC DRAM prices.
