Samsung Display signed MOUs with 9 equipment makers, 5 suppliers and 6 material manufacturers to join forces to create next generation displays, sources close to the matter told The Elec on Oct. 13.

A few days earlier on Oct. 10, the Korean display maker held a ceremony announcing its plans to invest 13.1 trillion won into replacing its LCD lines with OLED panel-making production lines.

President Moon Jae-in, along with Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, were among the high profile guests who attended the event at Samsung Display’s Asan 2 campus in South Chungcheong Province.

The equipment makers include Won IPS, ICD, HIMS, HB Technology, Philoptics, YES T and JASTech.

ICD is a company manufacturing logistics chambers for deposition equipment based on Canon Tokki parts. The Japanese company is now responsible for providing the deposition equipment for the 8.5-Gen lines for Samsung Display’s Q1 lines that are to begin operations in 2021.

For the open mask sealing and examination equipment for the Q1 line, HIMS will be the main supplier; Samsung Display has been FMM mask sealing equipment for its OLED lines from HIMS.

Wonik IPS’ role will be to provide the dry etching ICP equipment, a necessary part of producing Oxide TFTs. The firm is vying with ICD to become the major supplier. At the same time, Wonik is competing against YES T to supply heat treating equipment. HB Technology, meanwhile, has provided most of the examination equipment for Samsung Display’s TFT production lines.

Meanwhile, JASTech supplies the equipment for the bonding procedures for the large-panels Samsung Display makes for TVs. Bonding refers to connecting the display panels with the PCD with ACF. Philoptics manufacturers laser equipment.

The material makers are Green Optics, BHE, Innox Advanced Materials, Anapass and Nex+. Green Optics manufactures sapphire-based laser tube lens. BHE is a key supplier for small and mid-sized OLED module FPCBs at Samsung Display. Innox creates the back plate film for the display maker’s flexible OLED panels.

Anapass is a fabless chip maker that has been supplying the timing controllers for Samsung Display’s OLED and LCD panels, while Nex+ manufacturers SET parts.

The five material makers that Samsung Display signed on with are Dongjin Semichem, LTC, Wonik Materials, DS Neolux and SFC.
