Philoptics supplies battery-stacking equipment to Samsung SDI
Expecting over W40b of revenues in 2020
South Korea’s Philoptics will be supplying battery-stacking equipment to Samsung SDI’s plant in Göd of Hungary, according to industry sources on Nov. 19.
Philoptics expects revenues of at least 4 billion won from the equipment sales, given that related sales stood at over 30 billion won this year.
The company has been developing stacking equipment since 2018, and this marks the first time for the machinery to be used at SDI’s Hungary facilities.
So far, Samsung SDI had used the so-called 'jelly roll' method for producing square-shaped batteries used in electric vehicles. The jelly-roll technology is more productive, but it also doesn’t allow for 100% use of the space inside square batteries. Stacking, on the other hand, prevents this and can consequently enhance energy density.
Philoptics is now looking to supply tab welding equipment as well, which it has done so for Samsung SDI’s Ulsan plant in Korea and Xian plant in China. Ultimately, the firm is looking to take turnkey orders for battery manufacturing ranging from the stacking and tab welding. The firm is currently talking with a Chinese battery maker for a deal, market sources said.
