ITM Semiconductor supplying Samsung Galaxy S11: sources
Assembled and packaged in Vietnam
South Korea’s ITM Semiconductor supplied battery Protection Module Packages (PMP) to Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S11, industry sources confirmed on Nov. 18.
ITM took the battery cells manufactured by LG Chem in Nanjing of China, applied PMP and packaged them from its Vietnamese plant, the sources said.
As a result of combining Protection IC with MOSFET and PCB, PMP does not require a holder case, unlike the Protection Circuit Modules applied to the Galaxy S10. This means smartphone battery size can go down by up to 57% to result in bigger battery capacity.
ITM has been handling the battery packs created with LG Chem battery cells since 2018. The Galaxy S11 is the latest in the string of smartphones it supplied, along with Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy A70 and the Galaxy A90.
Samsung Electronics’ is currently supplied with batteries by companies including ITM Semiconductor, Samsung SDI and China’s ATL – most of which go into the Galaxy A series, indicating ITM’s PMPs have been applied to that lineup as well.
Industry sources now say that Samsung’s smartphones battery packs will all gradually adopt the PMP technology.
Meanwhile, ITM Semiconductor recently made headlines for supplying the PMPs to Apple’s AirPod Pros. Based on the deal and others from Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, the local supplier is looking to post 900 billion won of revenues within the next three years.
