Samsung’s Galaxy S11 to be as big as 6.8 inches

Samsung Electronics’ next flagship smartphones series, tentatively named the Galaxy S11, is likely to have a screen measuring a maximum 6.8 inches and a 108-million pixel camera, according to industry sources on Dec. 5.

This would mark the first time for Samsung to apply a display in the 6-inch range. The other two models that Samsung is expected to reveal in the first half of 2020 would be 6.2 inches and 6.7 inches wide, the sources said.

The screens in the Galaxy S series that were launched between 2017 and 2018 each had a 0.4-inch difference from each other. This year, screen size went up by 0.3 inches.

Next year, the Galaxy S11e and the Galaxy S11 will be 0.5-inch apart. The camera specs of the 6.7-inch and the 6.8-inch products will be vastly different, the sources said.

The bigger 6.8-inch Galaxy S11+ will most likely sport a 108 million pixel camera with the 5x optical zoom and Time of Flight modules. This is expected to be a 5G-exclusive product. It would mark the first time for Samsung to adopt the 108 million pixel camera for its Galaxy series.

China’s Xiaomi was the first to adopt the 108 million pixel, optic angle camera for the CC9 Pro smartphone it launched in November. The CC9 Pro, however, uses the Snapdragon 730G and therefore takes about 3 seconds for the camera to store the picture. The Galaxy S11+ would not have this problem because it would be applying the latest Qualcomm chipset.

Meanwhile, critics are concerned about the big size of the 6.8-inch screen, which might erode the marketability of the smartphone’s sister Galaxy Note series. The Galaxy Note 10+ that was launched in the latter half of this year also has a 6.8-inch screen. The Galaxy Note 11 is likely to be bigger than 6.8 inches.

The Galaxy Note series that came after 2017 were usually about 0.1-0.2 inches bigger than the Galaxy S+ model.

On the other hand, the new iPhones to be released in 2020 will sport screens ranging from 5.4 inches, 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches. The premium products are the ones measuring 5.4 inches and 6.7 inches. This means the Galaxy S11+ will have a screen that’s 0.1 inches larger than the iPhone’s highest-end module.
