Samsung Display builds 1st foldable OLED module line in Vietnam

Samsung Display has established its first foldable OLED module production line in Vietnam after seeing the potential of the foldable OLED panels that it began mass producing this year, according to industry sources on Dec. 23.

The display maker had mass produced the OLED panels fitted in the Galaxy Fold this year from its A1 plant in Cheonan, South Korea.

In Vietnam, Samsung Display has finished setting up the foldable OLED module lines earlier this year. The second line is also being set up, the sources said.

“Samsung Display is reportedly aiming to produce an annual 10 million panels in 2020, but the final plans probably won’t be released until Samsung completes its annual personnel reshuffling,” said one source close to the module development project. Samsung Display is said to be engaging Chinese smartphone makers as well to sell its foldable OLED panels.

Samsung Electronics, meanwhile, is targeting sales of around 500,000 handsets this year. In the first half of 2020, Samsung’s mobile business unit will be launching its first clamshell-type foldable smartphone that will use glass cover windows. For the Galaxy Fold, Samsung had applied a transparent PI cover window.

Samsung Display currently has its main OLED module production line in Vietnam. The lamination equipment used for setting up the lines in 2016 and 2017 were supplied by Toptech and AP System. The COF bonding equipment was from JASTech, while Finetek, provided the COP bonding equipment.
