Tech giants reveal 5G smartphone sales
In 2019, Huawei sold a total of 6.9 million 5G-enabled smartphones, according to the company on Jan. 15.The figure was slightly bigger than the 6.7 million that Samsung Electronics earlier revealed as the number of 5G handsets it sold during the like period.
Included in the 5G smartphones sold by Huawei was its Honor brand lineup, which has released the Mate 30, the Mate 20X, Nova 6 and Honor V40.
Huawei also announced that it sold 240 million smartphones last year. This reflects a 16.5% increase on-year. These figures indicate that despite Washington’s sanctions against the Chinese tech company that began in May last year, Huawei is faring well, according to industry watchers and the foreign press.
In December last year, Huawei had said it would ship up to 100 million 5G-enabled smartphones in China alone this year. During an interview with Bloomberg on Dec. 27, Japanese MLCC firm Taiyo Yuden’s CEO Shoichi Tosaka said that orders have been rushing in from Huawei and ZTE. He also said Huawei is aiming to ship 100 million 5G smartphones.
Meanwhile, Samsung said through its Newsroom on Jan. 3 that it has shipped just over 6.7 million 5G smartphones last year. The South Korean tech giant had released 5G-enabled smartphones of its Galaxy 10 model, the Galaxy Note 10, the Galaxy Note 10+, the Galaxy A90 and the Galaxy Fold.
Citing data from market research firm CounterPoint, Samsung said as of November last year, its 5G smartphones took up 53.9% of global 5G handset shipments. However, if Huawei’s latest announcement means that Samsung’s market share in the global 5G smartphone market would fall to below 50% for the year 2019.
CounterPoint reports show that this year, 5G smartphones will take up 18% of global shipment to reflect a 1687% jump from 2019 when they took up just 1%.
