Samsung heir calls for leadership in system chips

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong made rounds at the company’s Hwaseong facilities in Gyeonggi Province on Feb. 20 to take a look at the V1 EUV semiconductor production line.

Lee said that the company has made the first step towards fulfilling its aim of becoming the world’s No.1 system chipmaker, a goal Samsung set out in 2019. He stressed that the ‘tiny semiconductors’ produced from this facility must aim to contribute to the human race.

This marks the second time Lee has officially visited the Hwaseong facility. On Jan. 2, the Samsung heir had dropped by the semiconductor lab there.

In April 2019, Samsung announced that it would be investing 133 trillion won into the system chip production lines at the Hwaseong facility by 2030, including adding 15,000 more jobs.

Samsung began producing next generation products such as EUV-based 7nano and below chips The V1 line was completed in the latter half of 2019. Since 2018, Samsung has invested some USD 6 billion into the line.
