SK Innovation developing electrolyte additives with DUKSAN Technopia

SK Innovation has begun to improve the quality of electrolyte additives in a joint development effort with DUKSAN Techopia. Industry sources said on Mar. 12 that the pair may begin mass production of the key battery material within this year.

The specs have yet to be published, but the new additives likely will help improve energy density while allowing longer periods of recharging without damaging the batteries.

The two companies first began to work together on the electrolyte additive project in 2019. SK Innovation provides the patents and original technology, while DUKSAN takes care of the mass production based on the series of tests currently being carried out on samples.

This may take some time, as SK Innovation is demanding top-class quality to satisfy its EV clients. At the moment, Japanese companies are at the lead. In Korea, only Samsung SDI has secured the related technology.

One industry watcher said possessing electrolyte additive technology is significant as only a few companies have managed to master the skill. “By changing the additives, the battery makers can satisfy a whole new line of demands from carmakers,” he said.
