Doosan Solus was the sole supplier of high-refraction CPL for the OLED panels fitted in Samsung’s Galaxy S20 series to help improve the energy efficiency by up to 7% of the flagship smartphones, according to industry sources on April 3.

With the deal, Doosan Solus is now more likely to take the lead in the CPL market, the sources added. For the previous Galaxy models, Samsung had used the CPL from both Doosan Solus and DS Neolux.

Experts say while replacing the CPL may have produce positive outcomes such as the one for Galaxy S20, upgrading the OLED TFT technology is the more effective way to improve energy efficiency.

“There are certainly positive results from replacing the CPL material, but they can never compare with the effect of upgrading the TFT technology that can help improve the energy efficiency of the entire panel,” said one market watcher.

TFT indicates the part that is involved in controlling the pixels to turn on and off the device display. There are several different types, such as Oxide, LTPS and LTPO.

On requests from their client Apple, both Samsung Display and LG Display are developing next-generation LTPO TFT. LTPO boasts an energy efficiency that is about 10-15% higher than LTPS. Apple first deployed the LTPO TFT from LG Display for its Apple Watch 4 in 2018. During this process, Apple was able to expand the size of the watch display by more than 30%.
