OLED panel shipments for smartphones to grow 9% in 2020

In 2020, shipment of OLED panels for smartphones is expected to grow 9% on-year to reach around 513 million handsets, according to market research firm Omdia on April 9.

This comes despite projections that the total volume of global shipments of smartphones will fall by up to 13% on-year amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Triggering such forecasts is that Apple will most likely be adding two more OLED models to its iPhone lineup to bring the total to four this year, while Chinese smartphone makers will also add more OLED models to its high-end lineup.

In particular, the demand for flexible OLED panels is expected to grow 50% on-year, while that for rigid OLED panels will slip around 12%.

OLED panels were fitted into around 30% of smartphones produced in 2019. By company, Samsung Display shipped 470 million OLED panels for smartphones to account for 86% of the market. Hot on its heels is China’s BOE, Ever Display and Visionox. Altogether, non-Samsung panel makers shipped 64 million OLED panels for smartphones to post a 113% on-year increase.

In terms of handset makers, Samsung Electronics shipped 194 million OLED smartphones to post a 3% rise on-year. Apple shipped 56 million of OLED iPhones to record a 24% decline.

Chinese tech company Huawei Technologies shipped 73 million OLED handsets to reflect a 287% increase, followed by Xiaomi which shipped 20 million to rise 120%.
