Seoul Semiconductor files patent lawsuit against US Oynx Enterprise
Korean firm claims 12 patents related to Wicop were violated
Seoul Semiconductor has filed a patent lawsuit against US car component retailer Onyx Enterprise, the company said Wednesday.
The South Korean chip maker said LED sold by Onyx on CARiD, an online auto parts seller, violated 12 of its patents, in its filing to the District Court for New Jersey.
The company claims they used its Wicop, or Wafer Level Integrated Chip On PCB, technology that allows LED to be made without packaging, without permission.
Wicop technology is used for headlamps and daytime running light in automobiles as it conducts heat well and is small and thin.
Last year, a court in Texas imposed a permanent injunction on TV models sold by Philips for violating Seoul Semiconductor’s Wicop patents.
“We wanted to send a warning to companies that use our Wicop patents while disguising the fact by calling them ‘chip scale package’, a term used for conventional semiconductors,” Seoul Semiconductor said.
