APS Holdings has been assigned a government project to develop production technology for fine metal masks (FMM) used in deposition process when making active matrix organic light emitting diode (AMOED), the company said Tuesday.

FMM are used to deposit organic materials precisely when making OLED panels. The FMM stick market is currently dominated by Japanese companies.

APS will collaborate with professor Park Yong-bum’s team at Sunchon National University on the project given the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

They will work on developing FMM production technology using non-etching method on 6- to 8-generation OLED production.

They will develop 600ppi FMM stick manufacturing technology for use in half-size 6th generation substrate and FMM manufacturing that uses invar (a mix of nickel and steel). The two will also evaluate the reliability of these processes.

The project will be done step by step by 2023. The ultimate goal is to make the technologies developed commercially viable.

In February, APS announced that it will invest 20 billion won into new facilities to expand its FMM business.
