Seoul National University professor Hong Yong-taek has won the 17th Merck Award at International Meeting of Information Displays (IMID), Merck Korea said on Monday.
The price is given for academic papers in display technology. The award was set by IMID and hosted by Korean Information Display Society (KIDS).
The year 2004 marked the hundredth anniversary of display research for Merck, the company said. In 2013, the recipients was changed to academic work rather than thesis.
Professor Hong won the ward for printing process based elastic hybrid electronic technology. He showed elastic display, sensors and electronic skin that can operate stably despite devices being altered significantly.
This contributed to the development of next-generation flexible displays and elastic wearables, Merck said.
The Merck young Scientist Award went to Sookmyung Women’s University professor Lee Hyun-koo for his work in various display and lighting technology from Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD), OLED to quantum dot light emitting diode (QLED).
In OLED, Lee researched materials, devices, circuits, panels and optical simulation.
He also developed South Korea’s first SXGA grade OLED micro display. He was also the lead in the a national project to develop OLED micro display for virtual reality and augmented reality application.
