South Korea’s Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) said on Thursday that it has developed software technology for 28GHz mmWave 5G small cells.
The software is based on Qualcomm hardware, ETRI said.
It will later be applied to small cell equipment manufactured by South Korean small cell makers Eucast and Contela.
ETRI said the software was level to that of foreign developed software in performance but is cheaper, which will help in South Korean small- and mid-sized enterprises commercializing their 5G small cell products.
SK Telecom, Contela, Eucast and Qualcomm took part in the development.
The 4G small sell software market is dominated by Radisys and Altran. This previously put pressure on South Korean companies in terms of cost.
But the new software for 5G small cell will help local companies reduce their reliance on these software, ETRI added.
