Murata Manufacturing, the world’s largest multi layer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) maker, said on Thursday it will secure over 50% market share in MLCC for telecommunication and automotive sectors.
The Japanese company’s target, announced at an annual conference, seems to be taking account of the expanding deployment of 5G networks, which is expected to increase the number of MLCC installed on devices.
Murata said for telecommunication MLCC, it will secure 50% market share for 0603 (0.6mm x 0.3mm) MLCC and 60% market share for 0402 MLCC.
Currently, in smartphones, 0603 MLCC are the most widely used. Samsung Electro-Mechanics, the world’s second largest MLCC maker, also launches 0603 MLCC the most.
0402 MLCC is yet to be applied in the same rate as 0603 MLCC as it is difficult to make capacitors smaller while expanding their capacities. One smartphone has around 1,000 MLCCs inside them.
Murata said it will also secure 50% market share in automotive MLCC. In cars, 3216 and 3225 MLCCs are used the most. They are used mostly for electric vehicles and autonomous cars rather than fuel engine vehicles.
An electric vehicle with level three autonomous driving capabilities will have around 10,000 MLCCs in them.
Murata, along with Taiyo Yuden and TDK, is one of the leaders in automotive MLCC. Samsung Electro-Mechanics have less than 10% market share.
