Samsung Electro-Mechanics said on Wednesday that it was supplying a 0.65mm thin 3-terminal multi layer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) to a global smartphone maker.
The company is likely supply the capacitors for the Galaxy S21 series of smartphones launched by Samsung Electronics this month.
The new MLCC is 1209 (1.2mm x 0.9mm) in size. Samsung said it was the thinnest 1290 MLCC in the market.
The terminal is connected to the circuit so the electricity can flow through the MLCC.
3-terminal MLCC has one more terminal between the two terminals. This allows the electricity path to become shorter.
Samsung said the new MLCC will increase freedom in smartphone design for customers. The MLCC is 18% thinner than previous MLCC with thickness of 0.8mm.
Smartphones today have more components due to 5G and multi-camera set-ups that requires components to become smaller and thinner.
The 3-terminal MLCC will be able to cancel high spectrum noises from the switch in application processors in 5G smartphones. One 3-terminal MLCC can replace three to four conventional MLCCs, Samsung said.
The company said it developed the 3-terminal MLCC through its own ultra-fine stacking and thin layer molding technologies.
