Hyundai Motor Group and SK Innovation will co-develop a pouch battery for hybrid electric vehicles, the pair said on Friday.

The battery will be used on hybrid EVs launching in 2024, they said.

SK Innovation had supplied the battery for Hyundai BlueOn EV in 2010. The company also supplied its battery for Kia Ray EV and Kia Soul EV.

It is also currently supplying batteries for Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, which were designed based on Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP platform.

The pair will cooperate in development, production and quality verification for the new pouch battery, they said.

Hyundai and Kia will decide on what material to use, how they should be portioned, and other specification of the battery.
