Ultium Cells, the joint venture between LG Energy Solution and General Motors, will start recycling batteries starting this year

They will collaborate with US battery recycling firm Li-Cycle for the process, LG Energy Solution said on Wednesday.

Various materials in used batteries such as cobalt, nickel, lithium, graphite, copper, manganese and aluminum can be extracted and reused. Up to 95% of raw materials can used in the production of new battery cells.

The hydrometallurgical process that Ultium Cells and Li-Cycle will use for this also emits less carbon than other processes.

The pair will start the battery recycling near the end of the year, LG Energy Solution said.

General Motors has been recycling and reusing swapped battery packs and packs they receive from customers since 2013, the company said.

Ultium Cells use modular design for its cells, making recycling convenient, LG added.
