To be used in 5G smartphones
Samsung Electro-Mechanics said on Tuesday that it has developed a new 1005 (1.0mm x 0.5mm) multi layer ceramic capacitor (MLCC).
The capacitor has 20% increased power capacity, from 22uF to 27uF, compared to their predecessor, the company said.
1005 MLCC, along with 0603 MLCC, are mostly used in smartphones.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics said it will begin supplying the new 1005 MLCC to a global smartphone company next month.
There is high demand for MLCC from IT devices as more of them support 5G connectivity, multiple cameras and use flexible displays.
1005 MLCC are placed near application processors or GPUs in smartphones. It reduces the noise, allowing these semiconductors to operate stably. The capacitors allows alternating currents to pass through while blocking direct currents to eliminate noise.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics said is differentiated its key raw materials and production method for its latest MLCC.
It developed a 50-nanometer powder for the MLCC. This allowed the dielectric layer inside the capacitor to be thinner. It stacked 150 more layers of them in its latest MLCC.
It used ultra precise printing technology to stack the layers, the firm said. The capacitor also has top levels of DC bias, the company said..
Using the MLCC will extend smartphone life span and allow the devices to work stably, Samsung Electro-Mechanics added.
