Samsung is planning to procure 50MP image sensors from SK Hynix for the cameras on Galaxy A23 5G, which will launch during the second half of the year, TheElec has learned.
The Galaxy smartphone maker is planning to launch 4G LTE and 5G versions of Galaxy A23.
Samsung is aiming to ship 17.1 million units of the 4G LTE version and 12.6 million units of the 5G version. The 4G LTE version of Galaxy A23 will launch during the first quarter this year, while the 5G model will launch during the second half of the year.
SK Hynix had previously supplied Samsung with image sensors ranging from 10MP to 20MP in resolution.
This is the first time that it will be supplying 50MP image sensors.
Samsung will be able to cut unit prices down from the inclusion of SK Hynix has a supplier of 50MP image sensors.
Meanwhile, Galaxy A23 will, on its rear, pack a 50MP OIS wide angle camera, 5MP ultra-wide angle camera, 2MP macro camera and 2MP bokeh camera. It will have an 8MP camera on the front for selfies. 4G LTE and 5G models of phone has the same spec in cameras.
Galaxy A20 series is a low-end brand aimed at India and other emerging economies.
According to market research firm Omdia, Galaxy A21s launched two years ago had sold 19.4 million units in 2020.
SK Hynix had begun supplying Samsung with image sensors in 2019. It began by supplying low-end image sensors for the front cameras on the Galaxy A and M series. Last year, it also supplied the 13MP camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
