Samsung Display has begun the development of OLED panels with a two-stack tandem structure where the panel has two emission layers (EML), TheElec has learned.

The South Korean display maker is developing the panels to win the orders from Apple for its OLED iPads that are expected to launch in 2024, sources said.

Having a two-stack structure __ as opposed to the single-stack structure currently manufactured by Samsung Display __ doubles the brightness of the OLED panel while its life span is expected to be quadrupled.

Samsung Display has named the material set for the new OLED panels at the T series __ the T standing for tandem.

The OLED panels will be aimed at tablet, notebook and automotive applications.

Cupertino is widely expected to launch its first iPad that sports an OLED panel in 2024.

It is also expected to apply OLED panels to its MacBook and iMac lines afterward.

As these products are usually used longer than smartphones, Apple has expressed its preference to use OLED panels with two stack structures to its display panel suppliers such as Samsung Display in the past.

All OLED panels on iPhones currently have a single stack structure __ which Samsung Display uses its M series of material set to manufacture.

Samsung Display is aiming to develop the T1 material set first and get customer evaluation.

It is aiming to apply the material for commercial production in 2023.

For the set’s successor, T2, Samsung Display is currently aiming to start commercial production in 2024.

OLED panels made with the T2 material set will likely be the first panels used by Apple for its iPads, according to this timeline.

However, this is not set in stone and Samsung Display could launch another successor set called T3 beforehand or later.

Samsung Display will likely supply OLED panels made with the T series first to Samsung Electronics, its parent company.

This will allow Samsung Electronics to maintain hardware leadership over Apple by applying it first on its Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Book series, while Samsung Display gets a chance to verify the productivity of the panels before pitching them to Cupertino.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics is planning to use OLED panels with a single-stack structure made with Samsung Display’s M12R material set for the high-end notebooks and tablets it will launch this year.

M12 set has been used for OLED panels of smartphones; M12R’s R stands for rigid, as is a customized version of the original material set designed for OLED panels in IT products such as notebooks and tablets.

Samsung Display currently uses its A2 production line in South Korea to manufacture rigid OLED panels for IT products.

Meanwhile, the M12 set will be used to manufacture OLED panels that will be used in Samsung’s foldable phones launching later this year as well as Apple’s iPhone 14 series.

Also, Samsung Display had worked with Apple in the past in a 10.86-inch OLED iPad project, which was canceled sometime during the third quarter last year.

The South Korean display panel maker had pitched a single stack structure but Apple had expressed that it wants a two-stack structure instead. The project floundered due to

Samsung Display’s rival LG Display already manufactures OLED panels with a two-stack structure aimed at automobiles.

LG Display’s latest OLED panel sample aimed at iPads had received top markings in a recent evaluation done by Apple. LG Display’s oxide thin-film transistor technology used for the panel was also well received by the iPhone maker.

The challenge in a two-stack structure is to have the charge generation layer, or CGL, control the charge to flow in the same locations on the two emission layers, or else this will negatively affect the color purity and brightness of the red, green and blue pixels on the two layers.

Samsung Display and LG Display declined to comment.
