Samsung said on Wednesday that it will collaborate with Western Digital to set standards on Zoned Storage solid-state drives (SSD).

The collaboration on Zoned Storage is their first among their comprehensive agreement to collaborate in the standardization of next-generation data placement, processing and fabrics (D2PF) storage technologies.

SSDs with Zoned Storage are designed for data centers and enterprise applications to make storage more efficient while driving down operating costs.

Samsung and Western Digital founded the Zoned Storage Technical Work Group under the SNIA, which was approved by the organization in December last year, to drive innovation in relevant areas.

The group has been defining and specifying common uses cases for Zoned Storage devices, Samsung said.

The South Korean tech giant will also open Samsung Memory Research Cloud to customers during the second half of the year to customers and partners so that they can evaluate server systems with Zoned Namespace SSDs, Samsung added.
