Negotiations to continue with LG Display for launch in 2023

Samsung is unlikely to launch TVs that use LG Display’s white(W)-OLED panels this year, TheElec has learned.

Demand for TVs has dipped compared to the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic while liquid crystal display (LCD) panels that spiked before are dropping again, which means Samsung is in no hurry to launch W-OLED TVs as it did before, sources said.

The Qatar World Cup 2022 event set for November and the inauguration of the new right-leaning Administration in South Korea under President Yun Seok-yul, which is expected to be more favorable towards local conglomerates, was once thought to be an incentive for Samsung to buy W-OLED panels from LG Display within the year, but the cons outweigh the pros for Samsung in the present market condition, they said. The pair were expected to conclude their negotiations within the month prior to Samsung deciding to be more cautious about launching W-OLED TVs.

When Samsung started negotiations with LG Display last year to buy the panels, LCD prices were also still high and it was before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s strict lockdown measures over a resurgence of the virus there, they also said.

Samsung had also asked LG Display to co-develop W-OLED technologies going forward during the negotiation.

This is not a condition that the display panel maker has been receptive to as any co-project means that there will be limitations on how LG Display can use and sell them later set by Samsung.

The South Korean tech giant’s postponement to launch W-OLED TVs will negatively affect LG Display’s W-OLED shipment target for this year, which the company set at 10 million units.

That figured included 2 million units it expected Samsung to buy, another group of sources said, and LG Display’s inventory of W-OLED panels during the first quarter was not optimal __ meaning it had more in stock than it wished to.

However, for Samsung, as Samsung Display has postponed the installation of a pilot production line for quantum dot nanorod LED (QNED), it means it will still need to decide how many OLED TVs it wants to launch before QNED TVs are introduced to fill the vacuum left in the premium sector during the interim.
