Samsung is planning to begin production of its new MicroLED TVs that use low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistors (TFT) during the third quarter, TheElec has learned.
They will be the tech giant’s first MicroLED TVs that use LTPS TFT instead of printed circuit boards (PCB).
The use of LTPS TFT will allow the models to become smaller in size while still supporting 4K (3840x2160) resolution.
Samsung will start manufacturing an 89-inch model for its LTPS TFT using MicroLED TVs.
The South Korean company intended to start manufacturing them in May but this was delayed due to yield rate issues and the pandemic.
Samsung will also likely eventually apply LTPS TFT technology on its 101-inch and 114-inch models.
The LTPS TFT will be provided by Taiwanese panel firm AUO. Samsung Display is also developing the necessary LTPS TFT and will likely be added as a supplier later.
Samsung had set the price for the 89-inch model to around US$80,000; the 101-inch and 114-inch models are expected to be priced at around US$90,000 and US$100,000.
The LED chips will be sized 34x85 micrometers and provided by PlayNitride of Taiwan.
