PI Advanced Materials said on Friday that its new optical polyimide (PI) film production line with an annual capacity of 750 metric tonnes has started production.
With the additional capacity, the company now has an annual production capacity of 5,250 metric tonnes from its facilities in Gumi and Jincheon.
The new line is at the Gumi facility and will be used to manufacture both optical and general-use PI films as demand for optical PI films is yet low.
PI Advanced Material said it spent more and added more capacity for its new line to preempt the expected rise in demand for optical PI films.
The company plans to add another PI film line dedicated for use in lithium-ion batteries and electric vehicles with a capacity of 750 metric tonnes by the second half of next year.
This will bring its total annual capacity for the films to 6,000 metric tonnes, the company noted.
