Samsung has begun construction of its new chip foundry fab in Taylor, Texas, TheElec has learned.
The tech giant has placed orders for the equipment it needs to build the cleanroom.
Samsung has placed orders for the system ceiling material, outdoor air conditioning, and other equipment that it will install.
These pieces of equipment are needed before the actual cleanroom will be set up and will be delivered to the tech giant in January.
Shinsung E&G, Wonbang Tech, and other companies have received the order to supply them.
The tech giant is yet to place orders for fan filter units and other core equipment for the cleanroom, however, which will likely happen sometime during the first half of 2023.
Samsung announced back in 2021 that it will spend US$17 billion won to build a new fab in Taylor.
The fab will manufacture various processors for 5G, AI, and high-performance computing, the tech giant had said.
Samsung is aiming to start the operation of the fab in 2024.
The company always builds the cleanroom first for its fabs __ a strategy it calls “shell first” where the shell is built first and the equipment for the lines inside is placed depending on demand.
A cleanroom is a space where dust and other airborne things that may affect the chips during production are blocked from entering.
The room also has a set temperature, humidity, and air pressure to prevent chips from being damaged.
