SK On is expected to double the production capacity of its Seosan plant than initially planned, TheElec has learned.
The South Korean battery maker had planned to aim for an annual production capacity of 10GWh.
But this has now been increased to over 20GWh, at least four times higher than the plant’s current capacity of 5GWh.
SK On started manufacturing batteries for electric vehicles in 2014, with further expansions on the plant made in 2015 and 2016.
The company will decide which equipment makers to use for the expansion within the first half of the year.
These pieces of equipment will be delivered within the year and SK On is planning to start commercial production next year.
SK On is planning to mainly manufacture battery cells with lengths of 350mm and heights of 70mm for Hyundai Motor.
These batteries will be made with the z-stacking method __ where battery materials are stacked layer by layer __ for Hyundai Motor vehicles designed with its E-GMP platform.
