Econy will handle all the back-end processing orders for the ultra-thin glass (UTG) that Samsung will use for its Galaxy Z Flip 6 smartphone, TheElec has learned.

For the UTG of Galaxy Z Fold 6, Samsung will continue to use Dowoo Insys as its back-end processing contractor, sources said.

Back-end processing for UTG involves receiving the UTG substrate to thin it out before cutting individual plates out of them to fit the smartphone screen.

Samsung has been using Econy and Dowoo Insys as its contractors for the process since 2021, each handling Flip and Fold, respectively.

The tech giant uses Corning’s for the Flip models and Schott’s substrate for Fold models.

Corning and Econy are part of Samsung MX Business’ supply chain and Schott and Dowoo Insys are Samsung Display’s.

The MX Business, which handles smartphones, also has UTI as its back-end processing contractor alongside Econy. However, UTI’s weakness in etching technology made Samsung exclude it for the Galaxy Z Flip 6, sources said.

UTI however has Chinese smartphone companies as its customers, according to its filings for 2022 and 2023.
