Samsung is planning to increase the number of smartphones made through joint development manufacturers (JDM) in China this year.
The South Korean company initially planned to manufacture 4.4 million units through its JDM partners this year, but this has increased by 23 million units to 6.7 million units, sources said.
Samsung has also upped its total smartphone production goal from 253 million units to 270 million units, they said.
For the past couple of years, the company has used JDM partners like Wintech to reduce its production cost for smartphones.
The portion of smartphones being made by these companies has gradually increased over the years.
They accounted for less than 7% in 2019 but this has since increased to 25% as of this year.
JDM partners usually handle low-end smartphones. They handle the design and component procurement and Samsung provides the brand.
