SK Materials Airplus said on Monday that it will spend 700 billion won to build plants to produce gaseous nitrogen (GN2) and clean dry air (CDA).

The two gases are used in chip production. GN2 is used a carrier gas to transport precursors on the wafers during deposition. It is also used to prevent oxidation during annealing. CDA is used in semiconductor oxide layer processes and to remove waste gas.

How much these gases are used is directly correlated to how many chip a chipmaker produces.

The plants for GN2 and CDA are conventionally build near the fabs of customers. As SK Materials Airplus is an affiliate of chipmaker SK Hynix, the plants are expected to be built around Yongin Semiconductor Cluster at Gyeonggi Province.

SK Materials Airplus is a wholly owned subsidiary of SK Holdings and supplies GN2, CDA, argon, and other industrial gases to SK Hynixs, SK Siltron, and SK Specialty. Its largest customer was SK Hynix in 2022 and 2023.

SK Materials Airplus said it will spend the funds for the next ten years. A source said this was because gas plants traditionally takes a longtime to build.
