LG Electronics was considering using flip chip-ball grid array (FC-BGA) made by affiliate LG Innotek on its TVs, TheElec has learned.
LG Innotek has been fostering FC-BGA, a high-end chip board, as its new business, so winning the electronics maker as a customer can be a much-needed boost as it can use it as a reference to win other customers.
FC-BGA used in TVs are usually 35mm x 35mm in size and are considered a low-end product. They can also be used in wireless speakers around the TVs.
LG Innotek’s FC-BGA being manufactured at its new factory, F1, at its Gumi facility will likely be supplied. The factory has started operation since the first quarter of this year.
The component maker said in March that it was manufacturing FC-BGA in small volume but expected meaningful revenue by October at the latest.
Meanwhile, because FC-BGA’s main applications are in PCs, but the PC market is facing sluggish growth.
For LG Innotek to expand its FC-BGA business, besides customers like LG Electronics, the PC market is general will also need to recover.
