Battery equipment maker PNT is planning to build a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cell production line within the year, TheElec has learned.
The production line will be set up at its facility in Gumi with an annual capacity of 0.5GWh, sources said.
The batteries will be prismatic and is aimed for use in energy storage systems.
PNT will first manufacture batches of batteries before seeking a customer.
LFP batteries aimed at ESS are a relatively new business area for South Korean companies. Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solution recently started theirs, with the former making prismatic and the latter pouch LFP batteries aimed at ESS.
PNT plans to use water instead of NMP as a solvent to make the cathodes to be used in the cells, which is considered more environmentally friendly
The company will also procure most of the production equipment on its own, from mixing kits to notching equipment.
For assembly equipment, used to put the jelly rolls in cans, it will use Youil Energy Tech as the supplier.
