Same CoE tech used by Samsung, BOE
LG Display acquired samples of black pixel define layer (PDL) from Japan’s Mitsubishi and other companies during the second quarter, TheElec has learned.
The material is crucial for the application of color filter on encapsulation (CoE) on foldable panels to make them thinner, sources said.
CoE replaces the polarizing layer of the OLED panels with a color filter. It also uses a black PDL instead of a conventional orange PDL. As its name suggests, the color filter is printed onto the thin-film encapsulation layer of an OLED panel.
Without a polarizing layer, the panel becomes thinner and has higher light transmittance, which means it will also consume less power. The color filter also makes the color clearer and also reduces the power consumption.
LG Display’s testing of black PDL is for foldable panels and Mitsubishi’s yield rate for black PDL is approximately 30%.
However, the potential customer for the thinner foldable panels is yet to sign off on the technology, sources said.
Meanwhile, Samsung Display already applies CoE to its foldable panels, having started with those used in Galaxy Z Fold 3 back in 2021. It acquires the black PDL needed from supplier DS Neolux.
BOE and CSOT also applies CoE to the foldable panels they manufacture; they acquire black PDL from Toray and Mitsubishi.
